Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) proposes carrying out surface work to improve the pedestrian safety at the Kuhio Highway & Kukui Street and Kuhio Highway & Niu Street intersections. This federally funded project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006).
The proposed project will primarily involve surface work to improve the pedestrian safety at the Kuhio Highway & Kukui Street and Kuhio Highway & Niu Street intersections. The maximum excavation depth will be 18 feet associated with traffic signal foundations.
The project includes installation of a new traffic signal system; construction of concrete curb extensions (bulb-outs), islands, medians, sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and pavement striping; lighting and drainage improvements; and linear trenching along Kuhio Highway for conduit installation. Sidewalks and curb extensions will have excavation depths not to exceed 10 inches, drainage improvements will not exceed 4 feet 6 inches, and new streetlight foundations will not exceed 6 feet in depth. The project area is currently paved with concrete and contains little to no vegetation.

Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to contact HDOT and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the proposed APE.
